Apply to be an art docent for your child’s classroom this year!
Through Lanai's art instruction, children are introduced to art masters and enjoy hands-on studio art projects. They will learn to recognize artistic elements, become better observers, and expand their vocabulary as they gain a lasting appreciation of art!
Like last year, FOLB has funded a paid art instructor (Ms. Caprice from Viridian Art) to be the Lead in all classrooms. Ms. Caprice will be responsible for communicating with program coordinators and teachers, set-up/clean-up, and teaching the art lesson.
Parent Volunteer Art Docents will assist Ms. Caprice with set-up/clean-up and aid students in the classroom with materials. Art docent volunteers will spend 2 hours per lesson on a bi-weekly (every other week) basis: 1/2 hour prep, 1 hour lesson, 1/2 hour clean-up. This is a rewarding opportunity to work in the classroom in a creative learning capacity.
In an effort to maintain consistency and the overall quality of the Art Docent program, a group of volunteers will be selected to regularly attend and aid in the classrooms during art lessons: TK through 1st: Art will take place weekly, and a maximum of 4-6 volunteers per class will be selected and put on a rotation schedule, so you are actually in the classroom bi-weekly. 2nd through 5th: Art will take place bi-weekly, and 2-3 volunteers per class will be selected.

SELECTION CRITERIA |
Before applying, please read through the following information carefully: (1) Selected Art Docents must attend one of the in-person orientations that will be held on campus on Thursday, September 14th at 8:30am and 1:15pm. (2) Selected Art Docents must be LAUSD Approved Volunteers, so only applicants who have applied to be a volunteer through the LAUSD volunteer application process by August 28th will be considered for the art docent positions. (3) You must be available during the assigned art time for the class you are applying for the entire year. Confirm on the attached schedule before applying. (4) Parents with children in more than one class, please specify which class you are signing up for. If you are applying for more than one class, please give us your preference. Docents will only be assigned to one class if at all possible. We want to be sure to give the opportunity to as many parents as we can! Finally, do not contact your child's teacher to lobby to be chosen. There are many considerations when selecting docents. Please make sure all the above requirements are met if you want the best chance to be selected. Each year we do our best to build classroom teams of volunteers with a mix of abilities; including artistic skills, teaching/leadership experience, and those who enjoy working with children. You need not worry if you don’t paint like Van Gogh! Please do not be discouraged from applying next year if you are not selected. Application is now closed. Please check back in the beginning of the next school year when the application reopens. |
